What you mean about "unknown" ?
Not forget the option in preferences to accept (or not) mail.
Personnaly, as team founder, when I have time, I search peopole from my country who are NOT member of other team. Then send private to suggest to join my team.
By the way, please, remember the term of "spam". How many times did you receive such message ?
It are not. But I can understand it is irritating.
By the way, in 2006, the function of "wide team" is by Berkeley disabled. Only to prevent spam.

Yes this is very old method to send private message for inviting active and no team volunteers. Actually I used it before boinc times at seti and after, but last couple of years stop it because like you volunteers not like and report as abuse. So as a founder of my team from 1999 this is the only way to get new members. Except I don't use mail option cause its private for me too. Just sent private message for invitation from projects web site page. If you don't like just go preferences and disable related options and also you can be block that person so not getting messages from and not seeing forum treads.
