Dear participants,

we are going to restrict registration via the website. New users will be allowed to register only via the client. It is due to a large number of spammer accounts. We plan to do this on January 6th. If you have any objections please write them on the forum.

UPD: for web registration please use invitation code written on the front page.

With best regards, Natalia.

This will not stop them. You need to enable invitation code, and post it somewhere - e.g. on front page or in pinned thread here. You can also provide it after request sent via email to you, but other projects usually do not require this extra step.

Edit: I am not sure if invitation code can be entered when registering via client. You may need to disable registration via client if code cannot be entered there.

You might want to ask Rebirther (Project Owner) over at http://SRBase.com or at the BOINC message board FORUMS: API about how to enable restricted registration with invitation code.

There is a script to clean database from such accounts. It just deletes all accounts without results

Thanks everyone for advice! We added an invitation code on the front page. Web registration form will ask for it. From a client, it is still possible to create an account without a code. BAM! will require invitation code, we have requested their webmaster for that.

We will see how it goes. Today, there are ~40 spammer accounts every day, quite many for manual removal.

We use this script, but there are still legal accounts that should not be deleted, such as certain team founders who register but do not attach hosts. So even this script requires manual checking, which became too large...

I have seen this Delete Founder Accounts as well.

IMO, the team founder/leader should have run the project at least minimally. Otherwise, delete them. Also if you get too restrictive concerning registration you'll be violating DC-Vault rules and that will lose you a lot of participation.

I agree with Beyond. I keep a single VM attached to our team Founders account at many projects just to keep the account active. This way there is at least one work unit to suffice for preventing the script from deleting and then most of the time sufficing for requirements of a certain RAC that is needed. Any team captains/founders could easily do the same with minimal efforts. They could even post the weak account keys for others without access to the account to contribute to.

I agree also (and plan to attach to all projects of my team). But now we see that there is enough invitation code for web-registration.
