1) Message boards : Number crunching : Optimized RakeSearch app for rank 10 (Message 1348)

Post:
This is an old thread, the Rank 10 search ended months ago.

The current search, the SAT-based one is a different one, the current app is different.

Thank you for all, it was a pleasure to help this project!

It's impressive how bigger R10 is compared to R9!
3) Message boards : Number crunching : Same WUs reach 100% but staying active - No upload (Message 1249)

Post:
It is perfectly normal in this project, the % is based on the average number of steps a WU has to do. But before crunching a WU it's unknown exactly how many steps must be done to complete it, so some WUs are shorter and some are longer.
When you see a 100% WU still crunching and active, it's just because it's longer than the average, but it's ok. You probably noticed how shorter WUs just jump at 100% when they are completed. Same explanation, they had less steps to crunch.

This thread should be edited, the first post is about the old R9 search and does not apply for the current R10 search. Maybe create a new one for R10?

Confirming it works fine now. It will expire December 9.

Great news, thank you for the good job! This is why we are here, for the results!

Just posting to say that this problem still occurs. The post is always successfully posted, but if someone does not know that, they will retry and retry and post many times the same thing.

Wow, that sure is a big number!

Is it possible to get a download of all the ODLS we found?

Congratulations, we did it! Now, will all the results be available for download? I mean, a file with all the R9 (and maybe R8?) pairs we found.

I suppose that % is just related to the experiment they are doing now, checking how much time it does to find a R10 pair, since we will never complete the whole R10 search space. It's just like "we are at 14% of this small experiment", nothing else.

Thank you for your answer, I had no idea about that part! Now that explains everything!

So, if there are 10 millions squares per 1%, then in each WU there are 1 billions squares?

1 billion squares per workunits - is a very rough estimate for computation progress display. Actual number of squares in workunit between ~ 70 000 000 and ~1 700 000 000.

Just noticed I missed that answer. But any reason why each WU is so different?

Post:
And that's exactly why I made this thread, to understand why it is an estimate. As far as I know, each WU grabs some squares (let's say 1 billion) and compares them, looking for those that are ODLS pairs, how can their number being unknown? Is a specific reason for that?

Post:
As far as I know the range of squares explored in each WU is always the same (10 millions for the new R10 WUs?) so... what exactly makes each WU run time to be different?

Given how the size of each WU is already known (10 millions of squares), just giving a fixed amount of credits per WU would also be fine. Sure, the time required to complete each WU is different, but the amount completed is always the same.

The R9 search has been completed, well done! And now finding the next pair will be the real challenge, given how much bigger the search space for R10 is!
