Post:
I have passed a small (or large, depending on point of view) milestone today.

I now have 101 ODLS pairs credited as found by myself.

This has taken me 15 months to achieve this milestone, so we will see how long the next 100 take.

The three I have found so far this month also includes my biggest ODLS pair to date with 8 matching pairs found in 8 squares.

ODLS pair R9_010335814

Dear Conan,

thank you for ideas. It is nice to see people reacting and proposing new things. We thought of 3 more large animals to proceed that series of badges.
As I understand, the Moose is an American kind (or just the word is), and the Elk is Eurasian. And we definitely have no tigers! :) They live only in the Far East (Pacific coast of Russia). Also, no wild bulls of any kind.

We also think of starting a new series of badges, for the total number of findings instead of the credit. It can be birds of Karelia because they "collect" findings.

No worries,
I think now what I was reading may of been animals of the region during the past few thousand years, so the animals I proposed may of been in the area once but they are no longer there now.

Well of all my animal proposals that only leaves the Golden Eagle and Viper.

There are quite a few bird species in the area, so you have a fairly wide choice.

Conan

A bit more research and I found that the Moose of America is what Europeans call an Elk (basically the same animal), however to confuse things in America (USA, maybe Canada) they call the largest of the deer family an Elk or Wapiti, (the antlers are the easiest way to tell them apart), closely related to the American Elk (Wapiti) is the Caribou which is what Europeans call a Reindeer, so confusing.

You can add to the animal list of Viper and Golden Eagle, the Wolverine.

There is also a Black Polecat, but I don't know if it is related to the Weasel / Mink family or not.

Thanks

Maybe is time to create another "main" badges ,over 100Mil. Like 125,150,175,200,225+... to keep interes on project for "long time" crunchers and hold computers power here..

Now we think about this. But what think other participants?

We currently have this

1 Hedgehog 5,000
2 Squirrel 25,000
3 Hare 60,000
4 Weasel 125,000
5 Raccoon 300,000

6 Beaver 500,000
7 Badger 1,000,000
8 Boar 3,000,000
9 Ladoga Seal 7,500,000

10 Fox 10,000,000
11 Wolf 15,000,000
12 Lynx 25,000,000

13 Deer 50,000,000
14 Elk 75,000,000
15 Bear 100,000,000

Reading up on the Karelia Region I found a listing of some of the animals that live in the area (may also be Russia in general?)

I found

Moose,
Golden Eagle,
Siberian Tiger,
Viper

There was also a Flat-forheaded Bull but I have not seen a picture of it, so it might be just be an fairly ordinary member of the cattle family with a odd head.
Also I can't remember the differences, if any, between Moose and Elk (which we already have), possibly the Moose is the largest species of Elk, I think, so that one can be deleted.
+ I know Siberia is a long way from Karelia, but a Tiger may not know that.

So from this you could add a number of levels

250,000,000-----Moose / Flat-Forheaded Bull
500,000.000-----Viper
750,000,000-----Tiger / Siberian Tiger
1,000,000,000----Golden Eagle

All lofty goals but the 250 million level has already been reached.

My research was brief so could be wrong, the levels maybe higher than you want but go in the sequence of the previous levels. A lot of projects who thought 1,000,000,000 points would not be reached have seen that passed, with a lot of big players and groups like Gridcoin now working on heaps of projects.

The levels and assigned animals are to be changed to suit at will.

Just some suggestions, I would love to be chasing those levels, but it will take me a long time.

Thanks

G'Day hoarfrost
I could not find the availabilty of results that you mentioned, so I just waited to see if the error would go away as perhaps you had not released that information yet.
It still wasn't working for me this morning but it now working and I can look at the results, all good now.

Just wondering if the 'works' that were carried out had anything to do with the following error

It is happening on the August result that has been added to my pairs found list, when I click on it to see the pairs I get that message.

Conan

Than you Conan! I remember, that you crunch Einstein@Home in 2005 - at dawn of the project and glad to see you in RakeSearch!

Yep, been around awhile now. Still doing some Einstein and a heap of other projects, some better than others. This is a good one so that is why I am here, plus I new your name so had confidence in the project.

Going over the badges I think I have only missed the ODLS pairs found in September badge.
I have the 1st ODLS pairs badge (I joined in September so thought it was the September badge), zombie67 appears to be the only one with both 1st ODLS pairs badge and the ODLS pairs badge for September.
I may of even found your 1st ODLS pair, so that was fun (with zombie67 on the 17/9/2017)

Was there an October badge?
The Poincare Conjecture badge was for November?, I think.

So have I missed two badges?
I thought I had them all but now I don't think I have.

Conan

EDIT: OK found a badge link and the first 3 badges were ODLS pairs 1, 2 , 3; I have 1 (1st half of September), missed 2 (2nd half of September) and got 3 (Poincare Conjecture badge).
So I only have missed the one badge when I didn't find a badge in the 2nd half of September.
At least that what it appears.

Hello Conan!

Just one more thing that you may of already noticed, is that all previously awarded badges are still there and show totals that the volunteer has not reached yet. Needs to be re-aligned to the new badge system.

Yes, some badges, previously granted to crunchers now to correspond a significantly more high milestones. But:
1. All of this badges has been granted by the rules in force in those several days;
2. Many of milestones of this 48 badges, granted to participants in TOP20 can by achieved by them in near future;
3. All of this participants made a great compute donation to project in its start phase.

Thanks hoarfrost,

That maybe true, yes they got those badges under the rules at the time and they may get all of them again in the future, but if they stop processing work now then they will have badges that they have not really reached and show a value that that they have not met.
Lets say that a volunteer stops processing work after getting to 10,000,000 points but have badges showing up to 100,000,000 then people will get a bit confused.

But that is all OK, if you are happy with the current set up then we all will follow suit. For me it is not an issue as I am still getting the original "easy" badges and the point scale is the same as before.

I understand your point of view, even if I may think a little bit differently, makes the world a more interesting place rather than everyone thinking the same.

Keep up the good work, the project runs smoothly and the admins are very responsive, which a lot of other projects could learn from.

Thanks again

Dear all, thank you for feedback, and special thanks to Daniel and Conan for contributions. We thought and ended up with new limits and one new badge, which will appear soon. The badges are split into 4 groups, the first ones are easier to achieve. We also updated their IDs so that the animals go sequentially, otherwise perfectionists (like me) would suffer.

1 Hedgehog 5,000
2 Squirrel 25,000
3 Hare 60,000
4 Weasel 125,000
5 Raccoon 300,000

6 Beaver 500,000
7 Badger 1,000,000
8 Boar 3,000,000
9 Ladoga Seal 7,500,000

10 Fox 10,000,000
11 Wolf 15,000,000
12 Lynx 25,000,000

13 Deer 50,000,000
14 Elk 75,000,000
15 Bear 100,000,000

Thank you Natalia, that looks good, let's chase those badges.

I agree with Daniel that the levels are a bit too easy to reach at the moment, and even I maybe able to get all current badges with a bit of extra effort.

The higher levels should be a challenge to reach and I propose an adjusted range that extends up to 100,000,000

Badge_____ Current Level________ Proposed Level

Hedgehog------------- 5,000 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 10,000
Squirrel--------------- 25,000 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 50,000
Hare------------------ 60,000 >>>>>>>>>>>>>> 100,000
Weasel--------------125,000 >>>>>>>>>>>>>> 250,000
Raccoon------------ 300,000 >>>>>>>>>>>>>> 500,000
Beaver-------------- 500,000 >>>>>>>>>>>> 1,000,000
Badger---------------750,000 >>>>>>>>>>>> 2,500,000
Boar----------------1,000,000 >>>>>>>>>>>> 5,000,000
Fox-----------------1,500,000 >>>>>>>>>>>> 7,500,000
Wolf-----------------1,750,000 >>>>>>>>>>> 10,000,000
Lynx--------------- 2,250,000 >>>>>>>>>>> 25,000,000
Deer--------------- 2,750,000 >>>>>>>>>>> 50,000,000
Elk----------------- 3,500,000 >>>>>>>>>>> 75,000,000
Bear--------------- 4,000,000 >>>>>>>>>> 100,000,000

Even for people with modest set ups they can reach a good deal of my proposed lower limits. It will take a concerted effort to reach the top level as it should.

The way they are currently being handed out you will need a lot of badges and that just starts to clutter things up.

Adjusting badges for people at this early stage is not a real issue and I believe that the volunteers will quickly understand.

If you want all the badges then you should have to work for them.

Anyway just a few thoughts, see what you think.

Thanks
Conan

Hello Conan!

Just wondering what that badge looks like as I don't yet see a new badge on my account.

Yes, because you already awarded to this badge at 12 of November. :)
We publish a new bunch of results, with all participants which found them. Participants who do not have badge for the finds in "current period" - get it.

Thank you!

No worries, thanks for the information.
Best try and get the December badge then.

Thanks Joern for the link.

Thank you for the new badges, I have qualified for a "Perelman proof anniversary badge", as I found a orthogonal diagonal Latin squares (ODLS) in November.

Is there a list of badges awarded, or to be awarded, that we can look at?

36) Message boards : Number crunching : Optimized RakeSearch app for rank 9 (computations finished) (Message 183)
Posted 27 Nov 2017 by Profile Conan
Post:
I have added Linux AVX512 app, and apps for Linux ARM and Linux AARCH64. ARM app was compiled on Odroid XU4 with ARM v7l CPU, I am not sure if it will work on earlier CPU versions - please try and let me know.

I also found that I measured time incorrectly - it turned out that I had checkpoint file created, and I measured time only for last part of calculations. Ooops! :) I have repeated my tests, and got following results. This also includes results for ARM app on Odroid XU4, and AARCH64 app on Odroid CU2:
Original app:
real 54m57.442s
user 54m55.481s
sys 0m0.346s

SSE2:
real 6m2.431s
user 6m0.451s
sys 0m0.030s

AVX:
real 5m45.740s
user 5m43.759s
sys 0m0.026s

AVX2:
real 5m24.624s
user 5m22.626s
sys 0m0.042s

Odroid XU4 - ARMv7 Processor rev 3 (v7l)
real 20m37.322s
user 20m35.665s
sys 0m0.155s

Odroid CU2 - AARCH64
real 26m45.051s
user 26m42.920s
sys 0m0.060s

As you can see, this time AVX app has clear advantage over SSE2 one. So this app version should stay.

AARCH64 app is slower that ARM one in this test, but on real WUs it is faster. Total runtime is about 3-4 hours on my devices.

Thanks for this Daniel, great work and your an asset to the project.

Does the Win 32 XP app require a GPU? I installed the download and got the message that "App version needs Open CL and my GPU does not support it" (which it doesn't as it's an AMD/ATI 4800 type). I have not selected GPU for anything so why would that matter?

Still waiting for some work to download to my Linux machines to see the new speed up.

Thanks for your efforts

Conan

No, it is a CPU app. Strange. Where do you see this message?

It was in the Event Log at the restart of BOINC, it is not a problem so I wouldn't worry about it.
Thanks again

UPDATE: Your the man Daniel, don't worry about my above comments, the OpenCL thing does not stop the app you compiled from working, so I wouldn't worry about it.
My Windows XP 32 bit machine has now processed it's first work units and they have validated as well, and in under 40 minutes.
My work on the Linux machines was taking over 6 hours, can't wait to get more work on them.
