4) Message boards : News : New experiment in RakeSearch (Message 1499) Posted 8 Nov 2021 by Natalia Post: What for checkpointing, it is problematic to implement checkpoints in this experiment, because the sub-trees on which we perform exhaustive search are very different in sizes. If we do a checkpoint at higher tiers of the tree, it is very likely that 9 of 10 sub-trees will be processed very fast, and the 10th will take several hours, so no sense in a checkpoint. If we go into the recursion 1-2 tiers deeper, the check for need of a checkpoint will be performed too often and increase the whole runtime of a task several-fold.

Long-term collaboration with our colleagues from other Russian cities and the vast space of unsolved combinatorial problems have given us new challenges to be solved. The first challenge is to beat the current record on the number of transversals for DLSs of order 12. We already have tasks for the next 2 months, and there will be more. Technically, we have moved the project to the new hardware server and updated the BOINC server software. We hope that this new setting will bring you a good experience! It is really confusing, because there are few women in BOINC, but I am completely different person. The name is very common in Russia. I hope that my communication with crunchers was never rude.

Считаются пока другие проекты. И принудительно не помогает и очистка кэша... Потому что задания закончились и проект завершается :) Досчитываются только недостающие до кворума.

We aimed at trying what it would give with understanding that it will cover only a small part of the search space (see the initial post). Now we have covered that part and found a number of pairs with high degrees of orthogonality (but no 100% orthogonal). The statistics on these pairs is published and hopefully will be used by other researchers. As soon as the last tasks are finished, the RakeSearch project is ended. We plan to keep alive the website and the forum.

12) Message boards : News : Project results for rank 9 (Message 1089) Posted 11 Jul 2019 by Natalia Post: Dear participants! Today, on July 11, our project turns 23 months! In June, the latest search results were obtained on the DLS space of rank 9 and we begin to sum it up! The first and very important one is the number of diagonal Latin squares of rank 9. Each result recorded the number of processed DLSs and now, summing them up, we got the number 5 056 994 653 507 584, which coincided with the result of our colleagues from Gerasim@Home, listed in OEIS. Since the computational modules were developed independently, they did not use the same algorithms, the division of the space into tasks was different, and the optimized Daniel’s application was also useds, this is a very important result confirming the first assessment and the fact that the search covered all DLSs of rank 9! Another result is that a paper on the project has been accepted to a “Communications in Computer and Information Science” series as one of selected papers of a conference “Russian Supercomputing Days”. It will be published in 2019 and we will share the link with you. Discussion in Russian is here.

Запущены тестовые задания для 10-го порядка, пока — только для платформ Linux x86-64 и Windows x86-64. В среднем одно такое задание осуществляет перебор большего числа квадратов за то же самое время. Пока что ни в одном задании не удалось обнаружить пары перестановочных квадратов 10-го порядка. Мы планируем провести тестовый поиск по небольшой части пространства квадратов (возможно, порядка миллиона), чтобы понять перспективы. Если таких пар не найдется, то проект разумно будет завершить, чтобы не занимать ваши процессорные мощности зря. Если найдутся — это будет новым результатом и базой для нового поиска. For rank 9, we have a default application which is being awarded with *run_timebenchmark** credits using averaged statistics. But with app_info.xml, BOINC does not consider actual runtime but uses an average estimate obtained on default application. So, if an optimized application works 7 times faster, then the computer receives 7x credit for the same runtime. For rank 10, we have only default application and we are only testing if the search will make sense at all.

For rank 9, we are able to check the full space (that is almost finished, 96%). For rank 10, the full check is impossible, so we will start from special subsets. It is an open question whether permutational pairs exist for rank 10. So if we find some, it will be already a novel result. In Gerasim@home, they do not aim for ODLS graphs, although receive them as a lateral result. We will use their statistics (rate of pairs discovery) to understand if RakeSearch algorithm is useful to complement research of the space of rank 10. We are in contact with the scientific leader of Gerasim@home, and he will help to direct the research. In ODLK*, they obtain canonical forms, which is a different research.
